Fitzroy Named the Coolest Neighbourhood in Australia

Fitzroy has taken out the top Australian spot in Timeout magazine’s annual list of coolest neighbourhoods in the world, coming in at #27 overall.

The inner north hotspot has long been known as a centre of cool with its bohemian vibe, buzzing nightlife, cafe culture and eclectic shopping.

It’s not the first time the neighbourhood has been praised by Timeout. Gertrude street took out the #2 spot in the magazine’s coolest streets in the world list this year and Smith Street (half of which is in Fitzroy) took out the top spot last year.

To come up with the rankings, Timeout surveys its readership on their favourite neighbourhoods and then editors narrow down the selection into a definitive list of coolness.

It’s not the first time a Melbourne suburb has made the list, Richmond came in at #10 last year, Yarraville ranked #5 in 2020 and Footscray at #13 in 2019.

Other Australian neighbourhoods to make this year’s list are Sydney's Marrickville at #33 and Brisbane's Fortitude Valley at #47.
