The Star Observer compares the queer scenes of the nation’s two largest cities and Melbourne emerges as the the clear winner.

Oxford Street has long been Australia’s most celebrated gaybourhood, however as The Star Observer points out, the once Golden Mile has been neglected for decades and now contains many boarded-up shopfronts and is a shadow of its former self. More concerningly, the City of Sydney has now handed the redevelopment of almost half of the strip between Taylor Square and Hyde Park to a private developer with no guarantee the significance to the LGBTQI community will be preserved.

Compare this to Melbourne’s queer scene. Bustling Smith Street was recently named the coolest street in the world by Timeout magazine and last month the ribbon was cut on Saint Kilda’s Pride Centre - the second largest pride centre in the world. Melbourne is investing in its queer scene and the strategy is paying dividends.
