Neighbourhoods

At over 250km end to end, Crete rewards some planning — where you base yourself shapes the trip entirely. Here's what to know before you choose.

Greece's largest island is divided into four regions — from west to east: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi. Each is named after its capital city, with one exception: Lasithi's regional capital shifted to Agios Nikolaos, a village that more than earns the title.

Crete sits in an interesting position among Greek islands. It's less consumed by mass tourism than some of its neighbours, but it's far from untouched — and the experience varies dramatically depending on where you base yourself.

Heraklion is the island's largest city and its capital, and it functions like one. Tourists pass through, but the city has its own momentum — markets, tavernas, traffic, locals living their lives. If you want to feel embedded in a working Greek city rather than floating through a resort bubble, Heraklion delivers.

Hersonissos sits at the other end of the spectrum. It's Crete's concession to mass tourism: quad-bike hire shops, souvenir stands, and clubs that go until sunrise. There's nothing wrong with that if it's what you're after — but go in clear-eyed.

Agios Nikolaos is the quiet standout. A genuinely functioning Greek village wrapped around a luminous lake, it draws visitors without being overrun by them. It's the place to slow down, eat well, and actually talk to people who live there.

Chania is the one that tends to steal hearts. The old Venetian town is beautiful in a way that earns the cliché, and it punches above its weight for queer travellers — with dedicated gay venues and a recurring gay dance party through peak season. It manages the rare trick of feeling both touristic and alive.
