Built for big nights out, this multi-level Darlinghurst institution revolves around its vast main arena, where DJs, lighting and stage shows create a full-scale club experience. A mezzanine wraps around the dance floor, providing a prime view of the action before you dive back into it.
The crowd is predominantly gay and male, with shirtless dancers, longtime regulars and visitors partying beneath the lasers until late. Programming ranges from regular Saturday club nights to major queer parties, so check what is happening before heading out.
The Tunnel
“The Tunnel” is a private passageway connecting ARQ directly with neighbouring gay bathhouse Sauna X. Open during selected parties, it allows guests to move between dancing and the sauna—although separate admission is generally required, and clothing and shoes must be worn when returning to the club.
ARQ comes home
After 26 years as a cornerstone of Sydney’s gay nightlife, ARQ closed in March 2025 and was replaced by Aura, a “mixed” club intended to attract a broader crowd.
The reinvention proved short-lived: Aura entered administration in May 2026, and the venue reopened the following month under the ARQ name—once again embracing its identity as a gay club.
