Crete's annual queer Pride festival — a grassroots, activist-led event that brings rainbow flags, drag, music, and genuine political energy to the streets of Heraklion each summer.

HerPride was the first Pride held outside a major Greek city — a distinction that still shapes its character today. Organised by local activists and students, it spans multiple days and includes a parade, live performances, drag shows, art exhibitions, and discussions on LGBTQ rights. Lion Square is a focal point for much of the programming.

What makes HerPride stand out is its politics. The organising assembly rejects sponsorships and maintains a deliberately grassroots, non-hierarchical structure. It feels less like a festival and more like a community claiming its space — which, in a conservative, predominantly Orthodox country, is exactly what it is.

HerPride typically takes place in July, centred at Georgiadis Park with the march moving through the city centre. If your trip overlaps with it, go.
