A charming family-run taverna tucked just off the main square in old Hersonissos — homemade Cretan cooking, a garden setting, and a genuinely local feel.
Hersonissos's waterfront is lined with restaurants competing loudly for tourist attention, which makes Taverna 1930 something of a find. Step off the main square and about 100 metres to the left and you'll find this small family-run taverna — the kind of place where the neighbourhood kids are still playing in the street outside while you eat, and the food tastes like someone's grandmother made it, because essentially she did. Vegetables come fresh from the family garden, the menu is classic Cretan, and there are no printed menus — the staff walk you through the dishes instead.
The head chef Nikolas and his family run the place with genuine warmth, and it shows in everything from the quality of the food to the unhurried pace of a meal here. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. If you're spending time in Hersonissos and want one dinner that feels nothing like a tourist trap, this is it.
