Venetian Harbour

Chania's impossibly photogenic old harbour — Venetian architecture, a working lighthouse, and the best evening passeggiata in Crete. Worth every tourist cliché.

The Venetian Harbour is the undeniable centrepiece of Chania's old town, and however many times you've seen it in photos, the real thing still lands. The curved harbour front is lined with the remnants of Venetian shipyards and pastel-washed buildings that have been standing since the 13th century, with the iconic lighthouse — rebuilt by the Egyptians in the 19th century on an even older foundation — marking the end of the long stone breakwater. It's tourist-heavy for good reason, and there's no point pretending otherwise.

The best time to be here is early evening, when the light turns gold and half of Chania seems to drift down to the waterfront for a slow lap of the promenade. The tavernas along the harbour are reliably expensive and variable in quality — this is one of those places where you're paying for the view — but a drink at the water's edge as the sun drops behind the lighthouse is a hard experience to argue with. If you want to eat well, head a few streets back into the old town and return here afterwards.
