A long, largely undeveloped stretch of golden sand just north of Matala — with Minoan ruins at one end, sea turtle nesting grounds, and a well-established naturist section popular with gay men.
Komos (also spelled Kommos) runs for over two kilometres along the Messara Bay, backed by natural dunes, tamarisk-topped cliffs, and very little in the way of development. The southern end has a taverna, sunbeds, and a lifeguard; head north and the beach gradually opens into a wide, unhurried naturist stretch that has been a gathering spot for gay men since the hippie era. The gay-friendly section sits roughly in the middle of the beach, just north of the ancient archaeological ruins — the remnants of a major Minoan harbour town that once traded with Cyprus, Egypt, and Sardinia. Widely reported as one of the most popular gay beaches in Crete, Komos pairs naturally with nearby Matala, just 2km to the south, making it an easy half-day combination for anyone based in the area.
Make a day of it with Matala for cafes and people-watching, then head back to Kommos when you want fewer umbrellas and more horizon. A rental car makes the visit much easier on this stretch of south Crete.
