Neighbourhoods

Inner-city Brisbane has undergone a transformation over the past decade resulting in a number of buzzing neighbourhoods with countless great eating and drinking options. Fortitude Valley, Teneriffe and South Brisbane have all experienced a renaissance with new developments and streets lined with cute cafes, bars and restaurants.

Brisbane does not have a gay village as such, however there is a noticeable gay population in New Farm, Teneriffe and Fortitude Valley. Brisbane’s nightlife (including gay nightlife) is centred in Fortitude Valley.

Where to stay in Brisbane

Your base shapes your Brisbane experience. Here’s how the neighbourhoods stack up.

For gay nightlife: Fortitude Valley
The Valley has it all. Plenty of places to stay, the main gay nightlife within walking distance, and more cafés, restaurants and bars than you’ll get through in one trip.

For riverside living: Teneriffe and Newstead
These neighbourhoods stretch along the river. Teneriffe leans towards converted industrial buildings, Newstead towards modern apartments. Either gives you a good balance of local life and things to see.

For high-rise convenience: Brisbane City
The CBD is modern and walkable, with plenty of shopping, sights and transport on your doorstep. The trade-off: like city centres everywhere, it can feel a bit impersonal.

For local lifestyle: Paddington or New Farm
Low-rise streets of Queenslander houses make you feel like you’re living among locals, without giving up the bougie comforts: café strips and good dining are close by.
