It is one of the six main theatres in Melbourne's East End Theatre District and one of four that is owned by the Marriner Group.
The total venue seats 1,300 people but it is divided into two separate areas. The downstairs, which seats 800 people, is usually used for concerts or larger-scale peformances. The upstairs seats around 500 people and is used for smaller-scale performances and productions.
Built in 1929, it was designed in partnership between a local firm and a leading US architect called John Eberson who specialised in 'picture palaces' which we now know today as movie theatres or cinemas.
