The Athenaeum Theatre is Melbourne's oldest cultural institution.
It is one of the six main theatres in Melbourne's East End Theatre District.
It was founded in 1839 and is a hub for arts and culture showasing theatre, comedy and live music. It has a large main theatre, a smaller studio theatre as well as a subscription library. This library has 30,000 items and hosts regular events, talks, book clubs and a screen club.
It is used as a main venue for the annual Melbourne International Comedy Festival and for Melbourne Opera. The Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas presents discussions and talks at the theatre.
