South Brisbane has had a wave of urban renewal in recent years and now has a prominent skyline made up apartment blocks that have popped up in the formerly low-rise neighbourhood. Eating and drinking options have also moved into the area, resulting in a thriving inner-city neighbourhood.

The recently-gentrified buildings have adhered to the council's subtropical design guidelines to create laneways and urban spaces that catch the breeze and are filled with palm trees, ferns and creeping vines to provide greenery and shade. The South Bank parklands attract tropical birds to the area so you can enjoy a drink or meal on a balmy Brisbane evening with the caw of exotic birds in the distance.

An urban renewal success story, Fish Lane runs for several blocks in a laneway running parallel to Melbourne Street and it is lined with upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars. It appears unassuming during the day because it is still open to traffic, however, it comes alive in the evenings when the bars and restaurants open.
