Sydney beat Houston and Montreal as the winning bidder to host 2023 World Pride.

Sydney secured 60 pecent of the votes of InterPride, an international association of pride coordinators, at its annual general meeting in Athens. This will make Sydney the first city in the southern hemisphere to host world pride. The event will take place in February and March to coincide with the 2023 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. WorldPride 2023 will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the first Mardi Gras Parade and the 50th Anniversary of the first Australian Gay Pride Week.

The inaugural WorldPride was held in Rome in 2000. Other cities to host World Pride include Jerusalem, London, Toronto and Madrid. Copenhagen will host World Pride in 2021.
