The Green Park Hotel has been sold to neighbouring Saint Vincent hospital who will operate it as a mental health and community centre by day, and a drop-in "safe haven cafe" by night.
The venue has operated as a pub for 127 years and has long been beloved by the LGBTQI community and a landmark venue for Mardi Gras celebrations.
St Vincent’s chief executive Associate Professor, Anthony Schembri acknowledges the significance of the pub to the LGBTQI community.
"[From] 1893, when the area was predominantly working class, to more recent decades… as a particularly inclusive watering hole, especially for our LGBTQI community.
"We will ensure we preserve the building’s heritage and acknowledge its historical legacy"
"The Greeny" will be sorely missed.
