Grindr has been fined 100M krone (AUD $15M) by the Norwegian Data Protection Authority after it was revealed the app was sharing personal information with advertisers.

Grindr argued that it did not explicitly reveal users' sexual orientation, however the court rejected this argument and noted that the app markets itself as “exclusively for the gay/bi community” therefore any user could be assumed to be gay or bi.

The fine equates to 10% of Grindr's global annual revenue and is set so high due to the deeply personal nature of the information shared.
