Grindr argued that it did not explicitly reveal users' sexual orientation, however the court rejected this argument and noted that the app markets itself as “exclusively for the gay/bi community” therefore any user could be assumed to be gay or bi.
The fine equates to 10% of Grindr's global annual revenue and is set so high due to the deeply personal nature of the information shared.
