The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade will temporarily relocate to the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2021 to remain covid-safe

A one-year-only, Covid-safe edition of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2021 with an audience apacity of 23,000. The parade will also be broadcast live on SBS.

Last year's event was one of the last large-scale events to take place before Covid hit. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore acknowledged this in a press release from Mardi Gras, stating that "I know many in our community, myself included, have held onto our happy memories of Mardi Gras 2020 to get us through this challenging year."

Not all are happy about the format change from a free event on Oxford Street to a ticketed event at the SCG. Some claim that this is just another step away from the parade's activist beginnings towards a corporatised future.

General public tickets to the event have sold out.
