Club 77 is one of those rare Sydney clubs that’s actually earned the word “iconic”. Born in 1997 as a grimy underground rave den, it’s now a New York‑style dive with sticky floors, red glow, and a tightly packed dancefloor that still draws DJs and dancers who are here for the music, not the bottle service. Check the roster and you’ll see everything from local queer collectives to international techno heads and Sunday-night cult parties.
The crowd is a glorious mix: goth veterans, club kids, hospo night owls on their second happy hour at 3am, plus plenty of glittered-up visitors spilling over from Oxford Street. The vibe is consent-forward and deeply queer-friendly, backed by explicit policies against harassment and a focus on safety over sleaze. Security and staff actually feel like co-hosts rather than cops, which goes a long way when you’re three drinks in and making new best friends in the smoking area.
Expect big sound in a small room: a tuned system that makes the kick drums hit like a hug to the sternum, cheap-and-cheerful drinks, and a dancefloor that doesn’t really get going until late. If you want a polished Oxford Street superclub, go elsewhere. If you want a sweaty, low-ceilinged sanctuary where queer-coded chaos thrives until stupid o’clock, this is your spot.
The 4am Comeback
After Sydney’s lockout laws and the pandemic gutted nightlife, 77’s 2022 relaunch with a 4am license seven nights a week signalled a small but mighty rebirth for the city. The club leaned into cheap drinks, live DJs and a refreshed sound system instead of chasing VIP gloss.
