Melbourne is all about the laneways so when you have guests visiting from out of town, an absolute must is to take them to a cool laneway bar. Add Murmur Piano Bar to your list for this reason.
You get the very Melbourne experience of wandering down a gritty laneway where it's not quite clear if you’re heading in the right direction. Eventually you hit the blue awning which marks the entrance, walk up the stairs and are immersed in the melodic notes of the piano.
The venue is in a heritage-listed building oozing with old-fashioned charm. It’s an intimate, candle-lit space with exposed brick walls adorned with retro Italian advertisements and a stunning floor-to-ceiling fresco resembling a Renaissance masterpiece.
The piano is at the front of the room surrounded by tables. There is a rotating musician each night (check the website for details). The talent of the musicians is mind-blowing and really gives a sense of Melbourne as a city of creatives. Most musicians accept requests by writing your request on a piece of paper at your table and dropping into the request jar.
There is an extensive drinks menu featuring beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. They are not currently serving food; however, the website suggests this may change in the future.
It's an intimate space and very popular so reservations are recommended.
You’ll leave Murmur feeling with a skip in your step and a tune in your head already planning your next visit.
