Before and After Stonewall

A full decade before Stonewall, patrons at Cooper Do-nuts — a 24-hour café on Main Street frequented by drag queens, hustlers and gay men — fought back when police tried to arrest several of them during a routine ID check. Whatever was on the tables went flying, coffee cups and doughnuts included, and the crowd outside started shaking the squad cars. The event is patchily documented — even the year has been disputed by witnesses — and the LAPD has said any contemporary records were destroyed long ago. What survives comes largely from novelist John Rechy, who was one of the people police tried to arrest that night.

Three years before Stonewall, trans women, drag queens and sex workers fought back against police harassment at Compton's Cafeteria in San Francisco's Tenderloin. Management had taken to hiring security and calling police to clear out the trans clientele it saw as bad for business; when officers tried to make an arrest one August night, the patrons fought back, a police car got wrecked, and a newsstand went up in flames. It's now considered one of the first LGBTQ uprisings in US history — and the Tenderloin itself carries that legacy forward as the Transgender District, the first legally recognised transgender district anywhere in the world.

While Stonewall was galvanising a new liberation movement in the English-speaking world, queer people in Spain under the Franco dictatorship were building something of their own — and Pasaje Begoña shows just how brutal the limits of that freedom could be.

The passage between two adjacent buildings had become an extraordinary queer enclave under a dictatorship where homosexuality was a criminal offence. Tony's Bar, believed to be Spain's first gay bar, anchored a strip of clubs that drew in international visitors — including, at various points, John Lennon and Grace Jones — and the tourist money they brought was itself part of why authorities tolerated it for as long as they did.

Then, on the night of 25 June 1971, that tolerance ran out. Police identified some 300 people in the area and arrested somewhere between 114 and 119 of them. Twenty-three venues were shut down, foreign nationals were deported, and Spanish detainees went to prison. It's sometimes called Spain's Stonewall, indeed in 2019 the passage was forever linked with the Stonewall Inn with a twinning ceremony.

On 1 July 1972 — timed deliberately to land near the Stonewall anniversary — a few hundred people marched from Trafalgar Square to Hyde Park in what's recognised as Britain's first Pride march.

It was a modest crowd by today's standards, but it set the template for what is today one of the world's largest pride parades. The timing matters: London's march didn't spring up independently of New York, it was a direct, deliberate echo of it — early evidence that Stonewall was starting a chain reaction.

In June 1978, on the other side of the world, another anniversary march for Stonewall turned into a riot of its own. The day had been planned in three parts — a morning march, an afternoon public meeting, and an evening parade — with the parade deliberately scheduled at night to draw people "out of the bars and into the streets."

Police had approved the parade route down Oxford Street, then stopped it partway through, confiscated the sound truck, and ordered the crowd to disperse. The crowd didn't. What followed was a riot, with police using force severe enough to make headlines well beyond Australia. Fifty-three people were arrested that night — the moment now regarded as the birth of Sydney's Mardi Gras.

Stonewall's anniversary didn't stay confined to English-speaking cities. On 30 June 1979, around 450 people marched through West Berlin under the banner "Gay Pride," deliberately marking Stonewall's tenth anniversary and deliberately borrowing the name of the street where it happened. The name stuck: Berlin's Pride is still officially Christopher Street Day, a small but very direct thread connecting a march in Germany to a bar in Greenwich Village a decade earlier.

On 5 February 1981, Toronto police carried out Operation Soap, raiding four gay bathhouses and arresting 286 men in one of the largest mass arrests in the city's history. The response was immediate: the following night, roughly 3,000 people marched through downtown Toronto demanding an end to the harassment. It became a defining moment for Toronto's queer community and its Pride movement — one that's widely remembered today, among activists and historians alike, as "Canada's Stonewall."

Sydney turned its into Mardi Gras. London turned its into Pride. Berlin turned its into Christopher Street Day. Toronto turned police repression into mass mobilisation. Every one of these cities found its own breaking point — its own night the community stopped absorbing and started pushing back — and turned it into something that lasted. That's the real inheritance here: not one uprising that spread outward, but proof that wherever queer people stood together, the same courage showed up, again and again, and won.
