Look on any postcard of Melbourne and you’ll likely find a tram rolling down a beautiful streetscape. Trams are part of Melbourne’s identity. While other Australian cities ripped up their networks, Melbourne kept its network and trams have become a distinctive part of Melbourne’s character.
Trams will get you to most major destinations in the city. The operator Yarra Trams claims the system is the largest operational urban tram network in the world.
Trams are free in the CBD and Docklands area. As long as you get on and get off within the Free Tram Zone, there is no need to buy a ticket. See Getting Around for details.
