The Bookshop Darlinghurst

The Bookshop Darlinghurst

The Bookshop Darlinghurst
Sydney’s iconic queer book haven off Oxford Street.
Queer Business

A legendary Darlinghurst book den where shelves overflow with queer stories, theory, smut, and camp gems—and the staff are scarily good at finding your next obsession.

This business is now closed

More salon than shop, The Bookshop Darlinghurst is where you come to get lost between floor-to-ceiling stacks of LGBTQ+ fiction, memoir, theory, erotica, comics, and gloriously over-the-top coffee‑table tomes. It’s the kind of place where you pop in "just to browse" and emerge an hour later clutching a teetering pile.

The staff are the secret weapon: ask for something "sexy but sad" or "gay, goth, and a bit unhinged" and they’ll have three perfect recommendations in seconds. During Mardi Gras, it turns into a de facto community lounge—people comparing reading lists, planning nights out on Oxford Street, and sneaking in a quiet moment away from the glitter.

Whether you’re hunting a cult classic, a fresh local voice, or a souvenir that isn’t another rainbow keyring, this is the literary heart of queer Sydney—and an easy place to fall a little bit in love, with the books and the people browsing them.

Farewell to The Bookshop Darlinghurst

In 2025, The Bookshop Darlinghurst closed its doors after 43 years on Oxford Street. Founded in 1982 as a dedicated space for LGBTQIA+ literature and community, The Bookshop Darlinghurst has long been far more than a retail outlet — it was a safe haven, meeting place and beacon for queer stories and connection through some of the community’s defining moments, from the AIDS crisis to marriage equality and beyond.

Owner Charles Gregory announced that ongoing delays to a planned relocation within the Oxford & Foley development — which pushed back key trading periods like Christmas, summer and Mardi Gras and created financial strain — have made continuing untenable.

For generations of locals, visitors and queer travellers alike, this closure marks the end of an era — the loss of a space where queer literature lived, community was fostered, and serendipitous conversations happened between strangers who became friends.
